Flowing With God Instead of Fighting for Control

There is something interesting that happens when we truly begin walking in what God has called us to do. Instead of becoming exhausted, we often find ourselves both rested and energized at the same time. That seems strange at first, because ministry, serving others, and following Christ can involve a lot of work. Yet when we are walking with Him instead of trying to control everything ourselves, the work feels different.
Why?
Because we are no longer fighting the current. We are flowing in it.
A helpful picture is floating down a river on a raft. When you are in the current, the river itself carries you forward. You are moving, but you are not exhausting yourself trying to create the movement. The power comes from the current, not from your own strength.
Walking with God is much the same.
When we surrender control and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, His power carries us in the direction He has already chosen.
Jesus Invites Us Into Rest
Jesus made this clear when He spoke about the kind of life He offers His followers:
Matthew 11:28–30 (NKJV)“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Notice something important: Jesus did not say there would be no work. He spoke about a yoke, which was a tool used for work. But when we are yoked with Christ, the weight of the work is not carried by us alone.
He carries it with us.
That is why the burden becomes light.
Where Exhaustion Often Comes From
Many times the exhaustion believers feel does not come from following God—it comes from trying to control the outcome.
We try to force things to happen. We try to redirect the path. We try to produce results in our own strength.
When we do that, we are essentially trying to paddle upstream against the current of God’s will. That kind of striving always wears us out.
Scripture reminds us where our strength truly comes from.
Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles,They shall run and not be weary,They shall walk and not faint.”
Waiting on the Lord is not passive. It means trusting His direction instead of forcing our own
.
When we do that, our strength is renewed because we are relying on Him rather than ourselves.
When God Is Leading, There Is Rest
When God is truly guiding your steps, something powerful happens. Even when the work is difficult, there is a deep rest in your spirit. You know you are not responsible for controlling everything.
You are simply responsible for being faithful.
God handles the direction. God handles the results. God provides the power.
Our role is to trust Him and keep moving with the current of His Spirit.
A Simple Question to Ask Yourself
If you feel constantly drained, frustrated, or overwhelmed in your walk with God, it may be worth asking a simple question:
Am I trying to control the river, or am I letting God carry me in His current?
When we surrender our control and trust His leading, we discover something beautiful:
Following God is not about exhausting ourselves trying to prove something.
It is about walking with Him, trusting His power, and finding rest in the One who is already carrying the current.
