Are You Seeking God... or Just What He Can Do for You?

There comes a point in every Christian's walk where we have to ask ourselves a difficult question:

Am I truly seeking God... or am I simply seeking what God can do for me?

At first glance, those two things sound almost identical.

After all, isn't it normal to pray for healing, provision, wisdom, or direction?

Absolutely.

Scripture encourages us to bring our requests before the Lord.

But if we're honest, many of us spend far more time pursuing God's hand than pursuing His heart.

We seek peace.

We seek answers.

We seek breakthroughs.

We seek blessings.

But what happens when those things don't come as quickly as we'd hoped?

Many people begin to feel as though God has become distant.

Prayer feels empty.

Bible reading becomes routine.

Worship loses its passion.

And we wonder where God went.

Yet Scripture paints a different picture.

James tells us that when we draw near to God, He draws near to us.

Jeremiah reminds us that we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart.

Notice the invitation isn't simply to seek His gifts.

It's to seek Him.

One of my favorite examples is Mary and Martha.

Martha was busy serving Jesus.

Mary chose to sit at His feet.

Jesus didn't rebuke Martha because serving was wrong.

He gently reminded her that she had become distracted by many things while Mary had chosen what was most important—being with Him.

That story challenges me every time I read it.

It's possible to become so busy doing things for God that we slowly stop spending time with God.

Church attendance is important.

Serving is important.

Bible study is important.

But none of those things should replace simply sitting in His presence.

Perhaps today the Lord isn't asking you to do more.

Perhaps He's inviting you to slow down.

To listen.

To seek Him—not just His blessings.

When we seek His presence above everything else, we often discover that what our hearts were truly longing for wasn't another answer.

It was Him.
