Discernment: Recognizing God’s Voice from the Counterfeit

One of the realities Scripture teaches us is that the enemy does not always appear obvious. In fact, one of his most effective tactics is imitation. He studies truth so he can twist it just enough to make something sound spiritual while quietly leading people away from God.
This is why discernment is so important for believers.
The enemy is good at being a counterfeit. He knows the Word of God, and he knows how to distort it just enough to make someone believe they are following something righteous when they are actually being pulled in the wrong direction. This is exactly what we see when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness—he quoted Scripture, but he used it out of context to try to manipulate the situation.
Jesus responded simply: “It is written.”
The truth of God's Word exposed the distortion.
The Fruit Reveals the Source
While the voices can sometimes sound similar on the surface, the results they produce are very different. Scripture reminds us that fruit reveals the source.
Jesus said:
“You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?”(Matthew 7:16 NKJV)
When God speaks into our lives, His voice produces the fruit of His Spirit within us. His guidance leads us toward love, patience, kindness, peace, humility, and self-control. Even when God corrects us, His correction draws us closer to Him and produces a deeper hunger for righteousness.
God’s voice shapes us.
It molds our hearts to reflect His nature.
But the enemy’s voice works very differently. Instead of producing the fruit of the Spirit, it pushes us to react quickly, defend ourselves, take control, and justify our actions. Rather than drawing us closer to God, it shifts our focus back onto ourselves.
One voice forms Christ in us.
The other feeds the flesh.
God’s Voice Draws Us Closer
God never speaks simply to stir emotion or provoke reaction. His purpose is always transformation. When the Lord speaks into our lives, He is shaping our character and drawing us into deeper relationship with Him.
The enemy, however, seeks distraction. If he can get our attention fixed on offense, fear, pride, or self-protection, he can slowly pull our focus away from God’s presence.
Discernment begins when we ask a simple question:
What fruit is this producing in my heart?
If what we hear produces bitterness, impatience, accusation, or pride, we should pause and seek the Lord again. But when God's voice speaks, even correction carries hope, peace, and a desire to walk closer with Him.
Staying Grounded in Truth
The best protection against counterfeit voices is remaining rooted in the Word of God and sensitive to the Holy Spirit. The more we know the character of God, the easier it becomes to recognize when something does not reflect Him.
God’s voice will always align with His nature.
It will lead us toward love, humility, and truth.
And when we learn to listen carefully, the difference between the genuine and the counterfeit becomes much clearer.
Because in the end, the fruit will always reveal the source.
