If Jesus Said “It Is Written,” Why Wouldn’t We?

The Danger of Drifting from Scripture
There’s a growing idea today—even among believers—that we don’t really need to read or live by Scripture anymore.
Let’s be clear:
If you’re convinced you don’t need Scripture, you’re already being deceived.
That may sound strong, but it’s not condemnation—it’s a warning rooted in truth. Because the moment we detach from God’s written Word, we remove the very foundation that keeps us grounded.
We don’t drift into truth. We drift into error.
Jesus: Our Example
If anyone could have lived without relying on Scripture, it would have been Jesus.
And yet… He didn’t.
When He taught, He referenced the Scriptures. When He lived, He fulfilled the Scriptures. And when He was tempted by the devil, He responded with one powerful phrase:
“It is written.”
Not opinion. Not emotion. Not personal reasoning.
The written Word.
If Jesus used Scripture to resist the enemy, what makes us think we can stand without it?
Why Scripture Is Not Optional
Scripture isn’t just a historical record or a religious tradition—it is essential for every believer.
It does what nothing else can:
Anchors us in truth
Corrects us when we’re wrong
Reveals the nature of God
Protects us from deception
Points us back to Christ
Without it, we become vulnerable to anything that sounds spiritual but isn’t from God.
Yes, God Still Speaks—But So Does the Enemy
This is where many people get tripped up.
Yes, God still speaks today. He speaks through the Holy Spirit, through circumstances, through conviction, and even through others.
But here’s the reality:
The devil speaks too.
Not every voice is from God. Not every feeling is from God. Not every “word” is from God.
That’s why Scripture is so critical—it is our filter.
If what you’re hearing doesn’t align with what God has already written, it’s not from Him.
God Will Never Contradict Himself
God is not divided.
His voice will never go against His Word.
He won’t tell you something today that contradicts what He already established in Scripture. He doesn’t change His nature, His truth, or His standards.
So when we say, “God told me…”We must always measure that against:
“What has God already said?”
Guarding Against Deception
The greatest danger isn’t obvious evil—it’s subtle deception.
It’s the slow drift. The quiet compromise. The “this feels right” moments that pull us away from truth.
That’s why knowing Scripture isn’t just helpful—it’s necessary.
Because when the enemy comes, he doesn’t always come with lies that look like lies.
Sometimes he comes twisting truth.
And the only way to recognize that…is to know what is written.
Final Thought
If Jesus said, “It is written,” when facing the enemy…
How much more do we need to know what is written?
Call to Action
Don’t let the Word of God become something you visit occasionally.
Make it your foundation. Live in it. Learn it. Let it shape how you think, live, and respond.
Because in a world full of voices…
Only one has already been proven true.
