Intentionality in a Living Relationship with God

Intentionality matters in every relationship, and our relationship with God is no exception. But intentionality doesn’t mean rigidity—it means awareness, responsiveness, and a willing heart.
For me, one of the places I often meet with God is the sauna at the gym. It’s usually quiet, still, and uninterrupted. That space has become a place of reflection where I can slow down, pray, and listen for His voice.
But sometimes someone else is there and starts a conversation.
In those moments, I don’t want to be rude. Often, the person speaking is lonely and simply needs to be heard. So I listen. I engage. I give them my attention.
That raises an important question: Does that mean I miss my time with God that day?
Not at all.
It simply means I need to be intentional about meeting God somewhere else.
One of the subtle traps we can fall into as believers is assuming God only meets us in certain places or at certain times. But God is not confined to our routines. He is living, active, and present—and He often works through interruptions just as much as through quiet moments.
Just like any healthy relationship, our walk with God is not always predictable. If we want it to grow, we must allow it to grow in different ways. Sometimes that growth happens in stillness. Other times it happens in service, conversation, or compassion toward someone else.
When Jesus walked the earth, He was often interrupted—yet He never missed communion with the Father. He withdrew when needed, but He also allowed love to redirect His schedule. That balance is something we are invited into as well.
Intentionality with God doesn’t mean forcing a moment to happen. It means staying open. It means recognizing that if one door closes, another opportunity to connect with Him will open.
God is living. And our relationship with Him must be living and moving too.
