What If the Hardship You Ran From Was the Very Thing God Wanted to Use?

"Consider it pure joy, my brethren, when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience." — James 1:2-3 (KJV)
None of us naturally enjoy hardship.
When life becomes difficult, our first instinct is often to look for the nearest exit. We begin asking questions like:
"Did I miss God's will?"
"Is God telling me to leave?"
"If this is so hard, surely this can't be where God wants me."
While there are certainly times when God redirects us, we need to be careful not to assume that every difficult season is a sign we've stepped outside of His plan.
In fact, the Bible repeatedly shows us the opposite.
God Often Builds Through Hardship
When we look through Scripture, we discover that some of God's greatest servants were shaped long before they were promoted.
Joseph experienced betrayal, slavery, and prison before becoming second in command over Egypt.
David was anointed king, yet spent years hiding in caves while Saul hunted him.
Moses spent forty years in the wilderness before leading Israel out of Egypt.
The apostles faced imprisonment, persecution, rejection, and suffering while spreading the Gospel.
Even Jesus Himself endured the cross before the glory of the resurrection.
None of these hardships meant God had abandoned them.
They were part of His preparation.
We Often Misread Difficulty
One of the greatest dangers in our walk with Christ is assuming that God's blessing always looks easy.
We've sometimes been taught that if we're following God correctly, every door will open, every relationship will be smooth, and every opportunity will come without resistance.
But that's not the pattern we find in Scripture.
Often, obedience leads directly into challenge.
When Peter stepped out of the boat, he didn't find calm water beneath his feet.
When Paul answered God's call, he encountered beatings, shipwrecks, prison, and rejection.
Following Jesus has never been about finding the easiest path.
It's about becoming more like Him.
Hardship Reveals What We Trust
One of the greatest things suffering does is expose where our confidence truly rests.
When everything is going well, it's easy to believe our strength comes from our abilities, our plans, or the approval of others.
But when those things are stripped away, we're left with one question:
Is Christ enough?
Hardship has a way of revealing that He truly is.
God doesn't always remove the storm immediately.
Sometimes He allows us to walk through it so we discover that His presence is greater than our circumstances.
New Wine Requires Pressure
Throughout Scripture, God continually brings new life out of difficult seasons.
Pressure often produces growth.
Waiting develops patience.
Opposition strengthens conviction.
Trials deepen our dependence on Christ.
Sometimes the very season we pray to escape becomes the season that transforms us the most.
God isn't interested in simply making our lives more comfortable.
He's making us more like Jesus.
Before You Walk Away...
If you're facing a difficult season today, don't immediately assume you've missed God.
Instead, spend time asking Him:
"Lord, what are You teaching me?"
"How are You shaping me?"
"What are You producing in me that comfort never could?"
Not every hardship should be endured without wisdom. There are unhealthy situations God absolutely calls people out of. But many times, what we interpret as a sign to quit is actually an invitation to grow.
The breakthrough you're praying for may not come by escaping the hardship.
It may come through allowing God to complete the work He has begun in you.
Final Thoughts
God rarely wastes pain.
He uses it to build perseverance.
He uses it to strengthen faith.
He uses it to reveal His faithfulness.
And often, He uses it to prepare us for things we could never have handled before.
The hardship you're walking through today may become the testimony that encourages someone else tomorrow.
So before you run from the pressure, ask yourself one question:
What if this is the very thing God is using to prepare me for what He has next?
