Why God Didn’t Tell Us When the End Will Come

There is a reason God did not tell us when the end will be.
It’s not because He wants to keep us in fear. It’s not because He wants us guessing.
It’s because it was never our mission to know.
Jesus said clearly:
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”— Matthew 24:36 (NKJV)
That statement alone should settle it. The timing of the end is something God has intentionally kept to Himself.
And yet, throughout history—and even more today—many believers spend their time trying to figure it out. Studying signs, chasing timelines, connecting world events, and attempting to decode prophecy as if it were a puzzle meant to be solved.
But what if we’ve misunderstood our role?
The Problem With Trying to Predict the End
There’s nothing wrong with being aware of the times. Scripture encourages us to be watchful and discerning.
But there is a difference between being watchful and being consumed.
When our focus shifts from obedience to speculation, we begin to drift from the mission Jesus actually gave us.
We start asking:
“When will it happen?”
instead of
“Am I doing what He asked me to do?”
Trying to uncover what God has chosen not to reveal can become a distraction—one that pulls us away from the very purpose we were called to live out.
What Jesus Actually Told Us to Do
Jesus didn’t leave us guessing about our mission.
He made it clear:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”— Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)
And He said:
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”— John 13:35 (NKJV)
This is the assignment.
Not predicting dates. Not decoding hidden timelines. Not trying to “figure out” what God has already said we won’t know.
We are called to:
Share the gospel
Make disciples
Love one another
Live lives that reflect Christ
That is the mission.
Why God Kept the Timing Hidden
God, in His wisdom, chose not to reveal the exact time of the end—and that decision shapes how we live.
If we knew the exact day, many would wait until the last moment to get serious about their faith.
But instead, Jesus calls us to live in a constant state of readiness—not fear, but faithfulness.
Not anxiety, but obedience.
The unknown timing keeps us anchored in daily dependence on Him, not delayed commitment.
Living Ready Instead of Trying to Be Right
There’s a subtle danger in wanting to be the one who “figures it out.”
It can lead to pride, distraction, and even division among believers.
But Jesus didn’t call us to be the ones who are right about the timeline. He called us to be the ones who are faithful with our lives.
Instead of trying to understand what only God knows, we should focus on becoming who God called us to be:
Faithful in our walk
Loving in our relationships
Bold in sharing the gospel
Obedient in our daily lives
The Bottom Line
The focus of a believer’s life was never meant to be predicting the end.
It was meant to be living faithfully until the end.
When we shift our focus back to Jesus’ mission, everything becomes clearer.
We don’t need to know when He’s coming back to be ready.
We just need to be found doing what He asked when He does.
And if we live that way, it won’t matter when the end comes—
because we will already be exactly where we’re supposed to be.
